Film Restored – The Film Heritage Festival

3-7 November 2021

Call for Submissions

Submission deadline extended until 15 May 2021

Request for program proposals

The festival Film Restored has been dedicated to film heritage in the digital age since 2015. Digital restorations make their premieres at the festival; filmmakers, restorers and conservators share information about practical aspects of digital film processing; and specialists and experts discuss political and aesthetic questions, which play a role in the realm of digitization efforts.

The sixth edition of the festival wants to follow up on the subject of the previous year and focus on further transnational entanglements in film history, and is particularly dedicated to migration movements in cinema. Forced and chosen exile has occurred again and again at different times and in different places. Political persecution as well as repressive working conditions have led filmmakers to emigrate to other countries, where they were able to draw on old networks but also create new cross-border ones. Migration is as much a part of film history as it is a historical and contemporary reality.

These transnational production relationships reflect themselves in the constitution of archive collections. Bodies of work can often only be reconstructed in cooperation between international archives. The archival world thus reflects the diversity of cinematic migration and takes on an important role in the transmission of this history, wich extends to  the present day.

Possible Topics

  • Film exile: productions that could not be realised in the home country due to political persecution

  • Migrant communities: cross-border work networks

  • Preservation: the work of archives on non-national collections

  • Migration as a cinematic topic
