2025 FIAF Montreal Symposium
Film Archives Beget Films
Cinémathèque québécoise, Montreal, 28-29 April 2025

We are pleased to present the recorded sessions from the 2025 FIAF Congress Symposium titled "Film Archives Beget Films". This Symposium explored various approaches to “artistic archival films”: focusing on the social context, on a range of geopolitical issues, but also on the materiality of images, degradation of the medium, multiplicity of formats as markers of their time, and more. What role can both film and non-film archives play in a creative context? How are these positioned at the confluence of conservation, film restitution/exhumation, and support for creative work?
During the seven sessions of this Symposium, speakers from institutions around the world - including Taiwan, Lebanon, Slovenia, Mexico, Brazil, Burkina Faso, the United States, and more - presented on the practice of re-use of archival material to create films, within a variety of specific disciplinary and regional contexts.
The scientific committee was composed of Guillaume Lafleur (Director of Diffusion, Programming and Publications, Cinémathèque québécoise, Montreal), André Habib (Professor, Université de Montréal), Caroline Fournier (Head of Heritage, Cinémathèque suisse, Lausanne), Robert Daudelin (author and critic, FIAF Honorary Member), Drika de Oliveira (Head of Film Collections, Cinemateca do Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro), Nicolas Dulac (Head of Access, Valorization and Development, Cinémathèque québécoise), and Chantal Partamian (Film and Audiovisual Processing Manager, Cinémathèque québécoise).
