Affiliation Categories

There are two categories of FIAF Affiliates: Members and Associates. Film heritage institutions applying for FIAF affiliation can be given Member or Associate status, depending on the exact nature of their work in the field.

According to Article 4 of the FIAF Statutes & Rules, “Members shall be institutions with legitimate and primary responsibility for the preservation of an original moving image collection, which have resources to undertake this responsibility and will sign the FIAF Code of Ethics as a statement by which they agree to be bound.

Members are also encouraged to organize the projection and the viewing of films, using copies specially made for this purpose, to provide facilities for the consultation of documentation, to collect and exhibit cinema artefacts, to publish film literature, and, in general, to develop a full range of non-profit-making activities related to the promotion and diffusion of film culture, from a historical, educational, and artistic perspective.”

According to Article 5 of the FIAF Statutes and Rules, “Associates shall be institutions active in a field related to the goals of the Federation, but they do not necessarily have care of a qualifying archival moving image collection. They will sign the FIAF Code of Ethics as a statement which they endorse in principle and agree to uphold.”

All candidates for FIAF affiliation must fill in the same admission questionnaire, regardless of whether they would like to (or think they can) be admitted as FIAF Members of Associates.

Please note that admission of an Associate is decided by the FIAF Executive Committee, whereas the admission of a Member is recommended by the Executive Committee but must be ratified by the General Assembly (Rules 4 & 11 of the FIAF Statutes & Rules.
