3rd FIAF Programming Winter School at the Cinémathèque française

The 3rd FIAF/Cinémathèque française Winter School on "Programming Film Heritage" took place in Paris on 5-6 March 2018.

The full programme is now available HERE (in English) or HERE (in French).

For the third year in a row, FIAF and the Cinémathèque française joined forces to offer a short training course aimed primarily at professionals in FIAF archives and beyond. The theme of this specialized course is “Programming Film Heritage”, and was once again taught by experienced professionals from our sector, most of them programmers in film archives affiliated to FIAF. The course took place at the Cinémathèque française on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 March 2018 (two full days), just before the start of Toute la mémoire du monde, the International Festival of Restored Film hosted by the Cinémathèque française (7-11 March 2018).

Following the success of the first two Winter Schools, the organizers thought that there was still a lot to discuss and learn about the topic of programming film heritage, and that a third course could introduce topics not or little covered before, as well as explore further those already covered in the last two years. Special attention was paid to programming silent cinema and musical accompaniment, legal/rights issues, the relationship between “curating” and “programming”, film projection, and portraits of experienced programmers. We once again aimed to offer a carefully balanced combination of theoretical lectures and more practical sessions. Students also had more opportunities to exchange with one another and with the trainers.

International speakers included Jay Weissberg (Director, Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, Pordenone); Elif Rongen (Curator, EYE Filmmuseum, Amsterdam, and festival programmer), Bryony Dixon (Curator of Silent Film, BFI), Annabelle Shaw (Copyright & Licensing Manager, BFI), Antti Alanen (programmer, KAVI, Helsinki), Rachael Stoeltje (Director, Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive); Serge Bromberg (Lobster Films), Maud Nelissen (pianist and composer), Jean-François Zygel (pianist and composer), Catherine Hulin (legal adviser at the Cinémathèque française), Karine Nonnon (Head of the Administrative Department at the CNC - Direction du patrimoine cinématographique), Jean-René Becquante (Head-Projectionist, Cinémathèque Française), and Jean-Baptiste Hennion (independent projection specialist).

The course were taught in French and in English, and simultaneous translation was provided for all sessions. A completion certificate was handed to students at the end of the training.

The registration fee was 140.00€ (169.40€ inc. VAT) per person for employees of FIAF-affiliated institutions and registered students, and 180.00€ (217.80€ inc. VAT) for non-FIAF professionals. Registrations were accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, but a number of places were reserved for employees of FIAF archives. This fee included:

  • Lunch on both days of the Winter School, and refreshments throughout the training,
  • Free access to festival screenings (except the Masterclasses, the opening and closing nights, and the all-night screening) on the premises of the Cinémathèque française from 7-11 March 2017 (subject to availability).
