Reel Emergency Project

In August 2003, FIAF has launched the Reel Emergency Project, a cooperative venture, aimed at providing a small but concrete assistance to those archives whose national film heritage is in a state of extreme or terminal danger. Eight projects from various institutions have been presented since then, and adopted by FIAF Archives. The purpose of this call is to develop the project further.

The premise of the Reel Emergency Project is very simple: every year, as long as funds are available, a group of FIAF institutions will offer to preserve one reel of film severely threatened by decomposition or lack of archival storage facilities. The preserved film will then be given to the archive, for the purposes of conservation and/or public access, at no cost to your institution. All preservation and shipping costs will be paid by the host archive, and the original elements will be returned to your institution.

If you wish to propose a title for preservation, please fill out the enclosed form and send it to the FIAF Secretariat, Rue Defacqz 1, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium.

The proposed titles and contact information will be posted on the FIAF website, on this page. Archives will have the option, but not the obligation, to preserve the film at their own cost on a first come, first serve basis, and get directly in touch with your organization.
