Film archives are entering the digital era and are confronted with numerous questions in relation to collection and presentation policies as well as preservation and restoration issues.
We have now the opportunity to benefit from the European Community expansion from candidate countries of Eastern Europe.
We would like to welcome their important and valuable archival activity as it will be a great asset to our cultural and historical european Film heritage.
Political and geographical changes in the ex-Soviet and the Balkan areas led to the creation of numerous new archives.
Exchange of expertise and the meeting discussions will allow us to rationalize the archives situation from the point of view of preservation, cataloguing, technology and legislation, and this for both eastern and western institutions.
If film archives want to remain a living part of today's cinematographic culture and do not want to become crypts of celluloid, they need a new orientation towards the future, with new concepts and new policies.
