EYE’s Collection and Collection Staff are Moving House

Frank Roumen, Head of Collection, brings us the following news about EYE in Amsterdam.

For the first time in its seventy-year existence, all EYE Film Museum collections (excepting the nitrate films) will be stored under one roof. With its ideal new storage and preservation conditions, the new Collection Centre will primarily act as a depot and thus provide a safe and stable haven for EYE’s collections. In addition, the Collection Centre will be a building with a semi-public function, a centre of expertise where our professional visitors and our colleagues (museums, archives and research institutes) from around the world and at home are welcome to consult our collections. The Collection Centre is also a place for dialogue, fostering new insights regarding the collections and preserving, restoring, digitizing, providing access and presenting them.

We expect to receive the keys to the new Collection Centre on 26, Asterweg in North Amsterdam on 1 January 2016.
At present we are working round the clock to prepare the collection for transfer to its new home. The move will take place in phases from January and is expected to be completed in October.

How will this impact our service delivery?
We hope you will appreciate it may take a little longer to answer your emails. We would like to advise you that our service delivery may experience some delay from now on until the autumn of 2016 as we prepare for the move and transfer the collections. During this period, our digital collection will remain accessible online. The Sales Department will remain open and will be able to handle applications for digital films only until October 2016.
As of January 2016, EYE will temporarily stop digitizing films. The scanner will be disassembled and reassembled in our new premises.  We expect to be fully operational again as of October 2016.
It will not be possible to apply for the loan of analogue copies from 1 February to 1 November 2016.
From 1 March to 1 November 2016, film acquisition will also be put on hold.
Please note that EYE’s library will be closed from 1 March 2016. From that date, it will not be possible to consult books, periodicals and archives or view digital films until October 2016. A number of EYE’s digital information sources (including the library catalogue, digital documents and web links) can be consulted online in this period (www.eyefilm.nl/bibliotheek).
