Appointment of the FIAF Training & Outreach Coordinator

We are pleased to announce the appointment of David Walsh as FIAF Training and Outreach Coordinator, following a thorough selection process through which 13 strong applications were received and rigorously assessed, and interviews duly conducted. Currently Head of Digital Collections at the Imperial War Museums, David has served FIAF in multiple roles for years. Head of the FIAF Technical Commission since 2011, he has developed and taught a number of training and outreach programs for FIAF around the world.

The position of Training and Outreach Coordinator has been offered to David on a part-time basis and is funded for a total of 60 days per annum on a freelance basis, for a fixed period of 15 months running from 1 October 2016 to 31 December 2017, at the end of which this pilot phase of the Program will be thoroughly evaluated.

While David will officially start working in his new role on 1 October, we are already working on multiple events to assist, train and support projects, archives and archivists around the globe. Regular updates on those current and forthcoming projects will be given in the “training” section of the FIAF website.

As discussed during the last FIAF Congress in Bologna, the FIAF Training and Outreach Program has been established to formally and consistently continue the work FIAF has done in the field of training and support for decades through past or current programs (the TC training initiative, the FIAF Summer School now held in Bologna, the Film Archives in Africa Program, the “Escuela sobre ruedas” program, etc). The main goal of the Program is to meet the identified worldwide needs for education and training in the areas of film and moving image archiving, management, preservation, digitization and exhibition. In order to deal with the many different requests for assistance received from archives and archivists by the FIAF Secretariat more effectively and more fairly, we have developed a fillable PDF form (available in the next few days on the website in the three official FIAF languages) which anyone needing assistance in any of the multiple areas of support which we hope to provide will be able to fill out and return to us.

This program is built on the very long history of the work done since 1970s by FIAF leaders and members around the globe, often in partnership with other leading organizations in our field. We hope that by extending the program with this fixed-term, part-time position, we will be able to continue the great work done by so many in our Federation’s history.

If you have any questions on the program, please don't hesitate to email us at training@fiafnet.org.
