CANBERRA
NATIONAL FILM & SOUND ARCHIVE
Title of celebration foreseen for
the WDAVH:
Audiovisual Heritage: See, Hear, Learn
Description of the event/celebration:
The National Film and Sound Archive marks the UNESCO World
Day for Audiovisual Heritage with a special presentation by
ne Chief Executive Officer, Mr Michael Loebenstein.
The day seeks to highlight the importance of audiovisual materials
as an integral part of national identity through showcasing
he vital preservation work happening around the world.
At the NFSA - Australia’s premier archive of audiovisual
cultural heritage - this preservation work isongoing to ensure
future access to the collection. The work allows Australians
to experience their story by watching, listening to and seeing
sounds and images that reflect our culture.
One of the biggest challenges, according to Mr Loebenstein,
is “balancing the work of preserving analogue materials
whilst keeping up with industry moving to digital formats
and the proliferaion of dissemination via the Internet especially
across social media sites.”
Mr Loebenstein also emphasises the task for archivists to
balance the needs of safeguarding collections that are fragile
and suceptible to deterioration with the challenge of collecting
and storing the range of born digital works being published
every day.
“Whilst the NFSA is collaborating internationally with
organisations like the International Association of Sound
and AudiovisualArchives (IASA) to develop international standards
for preservation of digital formats, it’s an injection
of funds that is really needed.
Without the works in the national audiovisual collection there
is no document of place, time and experience. Without our
film, television, radio and sound collections, our cultural
identity history, impact and expression are lost forever.
Audiovisual preservation is vital to ensure we fulfill our
fiduciary responsibilities to past, present and future generations,
as curators and stewards of national collections that represent
and reflect our cultural richness, diversity and heritage.

the vast collection, visit www.nfsa.gov.au

Screening at the Jerusalem Cinematheque:
Israel's First Woman Film Editor
An Evening in Memory of Leah Axelrod
Description of the event/celebration:
Leah Axelrod passed away on August 25, 2011, aged 98. She
was a modest, wise, and honest woman. Supporting her husband,
pioneer Israeli filmmaker Nathan Axelrod, her greatest contribution
was her vigilant care of the Carmel Film Archive - one of
the most important resources for our audiovisual memory. For
many years, she devotedly created and collected Israel's most
memorable moments. The wonderful memory left to us by the
Axelrods, through the Carmel Newsreels which are kept at the
Israel Film Archive in Jerusalem, will shine for many generations
to come. And the little girl from the Montefiore neighborhood
in Tel Aviv, who played a key part in the realization of Israeli
cinema, will forever be remembered.
The evening will include interviews with Leah Axelrod, short
clips from the Axelrod archive, and selected parts of their
works: Over the Ruins, Etz oh Palestine, Bring Girls to
Eilat.

LAUSANNE
CINEMATHEQUE SUISSE
Title of celebration foreseen for the WDAVH:
Les 30 ans de la Cinémathèque suisse au Casino
de Montbenon
Description of the event/celebration:

ZAGREB
CROATIAN CINEMATHEQUE
Title of celebration foreseen for
the WDAVH:
Weekend of Croatia Cinematheque
Description of the event/celebration:
For the observance of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage this
year the Croatian Cinematheque in collaboration with Croatian
film Clubs’ Association, is organizing a rich three
day program with newly restored films, two epizodes of the
serial entitled Portraits, and the films of the two authors
that will be presented: screenwriter Ivo Štivicic and
film director Vatroslav Mimica.
As part of the Project of Digital Restoration of Croatian
Audiovisual Heritage this year three new titles were restored:
The Song That Captivates All (Takva pjesma sve osvaja)
and About our Marin (U našeg Marina) both made
in 1958, and The Shadow of Glory (Sjenka slave) made
in 1962. The first two titles were produced in Zora film and
directed by Vjekoslav Majer. In both the main topic is music
and singing and they are part of the genre of fiction films
for children and youth, which was oftenly neglected in our
film production. As part of this program we have selected
four animated films all linked to the theme of music (The
Man Who Had to Sing (Covjek koji je morao pjevati),
Piccolo (Piccolo), The Musical Pig (Muzikalno
prase) and Instrument, the Magician (Instrument carobnjak)).
The third title, The Shadow of Glory (Sjenka slave)
directed by Vanja Bjenjaš and produced by Jadran film,
is a story about bikers and the cult of ‘engines’
with Boris Dvornik in one of the main roles.
In the first part of the program we will show the new episodes
of the serial Portraits on more or less known film and television
workers. The project had started in the 1980s with the idea
to record and preserve the personal history, or better personally
experienced history of Croatian cinema. Two years ago, Croatian
Cinematheque, from which the project had originated, had again
revitalized the project with the difference that today, instead
of shooting on 16mm film, we are recording it in HD resolution.
We have also included a few titles of the two authors in program.
